John Potter's exploration of the lute song repertoire began with Stephen Stubbs andĀ Tragicomedia with whom he made several recordings, and he now works exclusively with Ariel AbramovichĀ and Jacob Heringman (separately and together). John and the two lutenists all feature on the ECM album Amores Pasados (with Trio MediaevalāsĀ Anna Maria Friman) and the forthcoming CD Secret History (with Lee Santana) which takes a radical new look at the sacred music of Josquin Desprez and Victoria. In various permutations they have given recitals and workshops in the UK, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Slovenia and Slovakia. They continue to develop new programmes expanding the lute song repertoire with repertoires ranging from intabulations of 20 th century English song to the jazz-like ādivisionā repertoire of Bovicelli, Rognoni, Bassano and others.
In 2017 John will be celebrating two important anniversaries. His programme with Ariel Abramovich Sleep Angry Beauty: the Naked Ayres of Sweet Master Campion marks the 450 th anniversary of the birth of the legendary poet and composer, focusing especially on his 3rd and 4th books (the 400th anniversary of which also figures in 2017), and in addition to their forays into lute song beyond the 17th century, John and Jacob Heringman will be exploring the songs of the remarkable and almost unknown English composer Peter Pope, whose centenary also falls in 2017.
