I have been working on a History of Singing for Cambridge University Press and am at an advanced stage with Tenor: the History of a Voice for Yale University Press. I’m contributing a chapter to the forthcoming Granta issue devoted to ECM and have recently written on Leonin for Goldberg and Veljo Tormis for Classical Music. A substantial article on Portamento in singing will appear in Music & Letters soon. A complete bibliography can be found on my University of York web page.

I lead the York strand of the ESRC-funded Investigating Musical Performance project (which grew out of the Royal College of Music's Learning to Perform) and have been advisor to various research projects including VoxEd and NetVoTech. I give research papers at universities in various parts of the planet and have been delighted to make several contributions to the British Library's Saul Seminars. I’ll be giving a keynote at the PAS3 conference in York on May 11th.

I’ve recently been appointed external examiner to the Royal Northern College of Music.
